The Library is nestled among the redwoods in an award-winning building and reflects the diverse intellectual and recreational interests of the community. Built in 1966, the 27,000 sq. ft. building contains hand-crafted furniture by Art and Tripp Carpenter and many original works of fine art including oil-on-canvas works by Ray Strong and Ludmilla Welch. The Library has a per capita expenditure of $160.36 and a collection of 115, 500 items. It serves a city population of 14,000 and an additional unincorporated area of 15,000. There are 11.5 FTE and close to 25 part-time employees. The building features a deck overlooking a park with a creek and redwood groves, a wood-burning fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows. In 1998 a 9,000 sq ft. addition allowed expansion of the Children’s and Fiction Rooms. The Library’s Lucretia Little History Room houses original source materials on many aspects of life in Mill Valley. The Library is part of the MARINet consortium, sharing a catalog and other resources with six other library jurisdictions within Marin County. It has an annual budget of about $2 million, and receives generous additional support from the Friends of the Library and the Mill Valley Library Foundation for materials and programming. The Library also receives support from the Mill Valley Historical Society to help preserve and promote local history. The Library has an advisory Board of Trustees appointed by the City Council.
